Flipping through the pages of the 1934 Little Compton Summer Locater , it’s easy to get transported back to a time when motoring down Sakonnet Point Road was a whole different experience. 'Gateway, Sakonnet, R. I.' Postcard, Published by Sakonnet Transportation Co. - 1912 - 'Great Scenery' of Lloyd's Beach

Image
The entrance to present day Lloyd's Beach is displayed in this 1912 postcard. The entrance and beach look much the same today, though Lloyd's Beach appears considerably less rocky in this 1912 postcard. Back then, an unpaved sandy road led up to the imposing entrance, with sweeping dunes visible in the distance. A one cent stamp made sure this 1912 postcard made it from Little Compton to Boston. Although the sender's handwriting was a bit shaky, they made sure to emphasize the "great scenery" of Sakonnet and Little Compton, Rhode Island. In 1912, Sakonnet boasted its own postmark, and this "Gateway" to Lloyd's Beach was a landmark that visitors traveled long distances to see. Produced for the Sakonnet Transportation Co., the postcard likely served as a marketing tool to encourage tourism to Little Compton’s beaches. Like many other postcards of the era, "Gateway, Sakonnet, RI" was manufactured in Germany, printed by B.Y. and Co. This post c...

Sakonnet Lighthouse - A Beacon of Strength & Beauty off Lloyd's Beach, Little Compton

Image
Sakonnet Lighthouse, as seen from Lloyd's Beach. Townspeople have always been proud of the Sakonnet Lighthouse, and rightly so. Like Mount Rushmore and the Great Wall of China, Sakonnet Light is a symbol of strength and resilience. Built in 1884, Sakonnet Light has been a staple of the coastal landscape for longer than any of us have walked Little Compton's fertile soil. In an era of divided political loyalties, Sakonnet Light enjoys near-universal reverence from LC locals and visitors alike. Admirers should enjoy the Sakonnet Lighthouse from Lloyd's Beach, as it is not open to the public. This post contains an affiliate link. Lloyd's Beach Sign Offers Welcome, Warning to Visitors (Little Compton, RI)

Image
Welcome Sign to Lloyd's Beach - Leave Only Your Footprints. Lloyd's Beach was until recently a hidden gem where LC townspeople could enjoy a bit of sandy solitude, even on a weekend in July. Thanks to Instagram and similar online outlets, the secret is out - Lloyd's Beach has been 'discovered' by the masses.  These days, town residents are lucky to score a summertime parking spot on Sakonnet Point, never mind Rhode Island Road. While this sign is a helpful deterrent, out-of-towners looking for a free beach still find their way to Lloyd's.  As LC residents adjust to this harsh new reality, we can rest assured that Lloyd's is ours in the colder weather - we'll always have February.
