Breakfast, Lunch, AND Dinner in 1934? The Unbelievable Menu of Little Compton's Hannah Elizabeth Tea Room

An advertisement from the 1934 Summer Locater for the Hannah Elizabeth Tea Room in Little Compton, R.I. The text lists offered services including Breakfast, Luncheon, Dinner, Afternoon Tea, Ice Cream, Catering, Home Cooked Food, and Picnic Lunches Put Up, along with Telephone 250.
The 1934 Summer Locater advertisement for the Hannah Elizabeth Tea Room, offering everything from afternoon tea and ice cream to full breakfasts and picnic lunches in Little Compton.

I was recently flipping through a copy of the 1934 Summer Locater when an advertisement for a local business stopped me in my tracks.

It was an ad for the Hannah Elizabeth Tea Room, a small business right here in Little Compton.

Now, when you hear "Tea Room," you might imagine a modest spot offering light sips and tiny sandwiches. But Hannah Elizabeth served so much more than tea.

Her 1934 advertisement boasted an incredible array of offerings: Breakfast, Luncheon, Dinner, Afternoon Tea, Ice Cream, Catering, Home Cooked Food, and even featured "Picnic Lunches Put Up"!

I was in absolute shock reading this. Breakfast, lunch, AND dinner—all under one roof, right here in town, in 1934!

Contemporary townspeople will know that finding dinner in Little Compton can be quite the quest these days. It becomes downright impossible during the winter months, especially when A-1 Pizza takes their well-deserved annual vacation.

Unfortunately, I don't know anything else about Hannah Elizabeth or her establishment apart from this vintage ad.

However, as someone who regularly drinks up to five cups of tea per day (English breakfast with milk, and a cookie, if you please!), I can tell you with certainty that I would have been one of Hannah's most loyal customers.

Luckily, there is hope on the horizon for our local food scene.

Elsie's on The Commons has recently opened to rave reviews, backed by dedicated local ownership.

Meanwhile, Judy at The Art Cafe continues to serve a vital need, maintaining that essential "third place" where our community can gather and connect.

Still, Hannah Elizabeth was surely onto something back in 1934.

Afternoon tea followed by a warm, home-cooked dinner sounds absolutely delightful after a long morning at the beach!

Hopefully, taking a look back at this vintage ad will serve as a bit of inspiration for a future Little Compton entrepreneur!
